If I recall, all the people in the balcony were black. Since it was very obvious that Tom was innocent and everyone knew it, the only reason he was convicted being his skin color, that was the only way Atticus would be honored. He lost his case for no reason other than racism. However, the black people of the town appreciated his efforts, so they gave him a standing ovation to let him know that. He was able to look past skin color in a very racist time in order to seek justice at the price of his reputation.
